Throw kindness around like confetti.

I’ve always loved this quote. It paints a beautiful picture of how we should treat others. The idea that kindness costs nothing, so we should spread as much of it around as we can! However, I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that sometimes you meet certain people who rub you up the wrong way, and the very last thing in the world you want to do is say anything kind to them.

Kindness and compassion are two things that I am so passionate about. Because I know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of someone who is neither of those things. It’s truly heartbreaking to see all of the awful things that are happening in our world today. The list of things that are going wrong or the injustices that are happening every day is endless. I know, for me, it can be overwhelming. All of the people that need help and you just feel powerless to do anything.

I am a big believer in the phrase, ‘charity starts at home.’ I believe charity, kindness, compassion, love, all start with the people we share our lives with every day. Offering someone a shoulder to cry on, or a listening ear, without any judgment, is kind. Making someone dinner when you know they’re sick, is kind. Asking someone over for a coffee when you’ve not seen them in a while, is kind. Seeing a funny picture and sending it someone to make them smile, is kind. Giving a friend the biggest hug when you know how sad they’ve been, is kind. Asking a co-worker you wouldn’t normally talk to how they’ve been, is kind.  Loving someone and not expecting anything in return, is kind.

Kindness can come in any form. There is no ‘right way’ to be compassionate. There is just making a small sacrifice to make someone else’s day, week, hour, better.

However, sometimes the days and weeks gang up on you and life becomes utterly unbearable. Every minute you have, you need. That’s when smiling at the cashier who takes your coffee order every day, is kind. Telling that person stocking the shelves at your local grocery store that they look lovely today, is kind. It takes nothing away from you but adds such warmth to another person’s day.

It may sound naive and childish to say, but I believe kindness can change the world. It’s a beautiful thing that we have the ability to brighten another’s day, I think we should use that ability more.
